Special nature reserve "Uvac" and a cruise through the Uvac canyon
The special nature reserve "Uvac" is a natural asset of exceptional importance, i.e. natural good of the I category. The central morphological unit of the reserve is represented by the canyon valley of the Uvac river with its tributaries. The waters of the Uvac deeply cut their bed into the limestone rocks and formed narrow gorges - canyon valleys with high, steep limestone cliffs. The special value of the canyon parts are the pinched meanders, whose headlands have a relative height of up to 100m. Everyone who visits it rightly calls it the Serbian Colorado.
"Uvac" was placed under protection in order to preserve the griffon vulture - a rare species of vulture eagle, imposing size, wingspan of up to 3m, which makes it a powerful flyer whose flight was researched by scientists - aeronautics and applied in the construction of aircraft. The griffon vulture is a bird that does not kill, does not hunt for prey, does not seek a victim. Its role in the food chain in the ecosystem is unique and irreplaceable - its only food is dead animals, which prevents the spread of infections and thus constitutes "natural recycling". That is why this environmentalist is appreciated all over the world.
Cruising Uvac is carried out by boats and catamarans that depart from the dam at Rastoki. The tour consists of a boat ride through the winding, well-known meanders, a visit to the Ice Cave and a visit to the lookout from which there is a view of the meanders and a colony of griffon vultures circling the sky above the lake. The tour takes about 4 hours and a total of 32 kilometers in both directions.
