In the village of Sirogojno, 26 km from the tourist center Zlatibor, there is the only open-air museum in Serbia "Staro selo". Old log cabins from all parts of Zlatibor were brought to the site of five hectares, next to the church of Saints Peter and Paul, in order to be presented and preserved here.
The museum consists of two parts. The first is a group of houses that have preserved their original appearance and purpose, and they make up a permanent museum exhibit formed in two Zlatibor courtyards. The second group consists of houses that have preserved their original appearance, but their purpose has been changed, they have been adapted and adapted to tourist needs. These are the hall, souvenir shop, tavern, apartment buildings...
The museum display of Zlatibor log cabins is a testimony of the culture of living in the Zlatibor area in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time, people lived in cooperatives with up to 50 members, and the Zlatibor garden consisted of a large number of smaller buildings arranged around the "main house".
Built on a slope facing the sun, the houses are square in shape with walls made of horizontally stacked logs at the corners tied into a "cetr", covered with shingles, stone slabs or straw. On the roof there were "badge" openings that were used for air circulation, and at the very top of the house there was a chimney called "kapić".
The "main house" has two rooms - the "house" and the "room", and there was a basement below the room. The east and west doors, in addition to being functional, also had symbolic meanings (everything good and beautiful entered the east door - newborn, bride, godfathers, guests... and everything bad went out the west door).
The central place of the "house" was occupied by the hearth, the fire was always burning in it, food was prepared on it, the members of the cooperative gathered around the hearth in the evening, agreed on the work for the next day, and then slept there.
The homestead consisted of a vayat (a building that every son of the host got when he got married), a milkman (for storing milk and dairy products), a bakery (for baking bread), a barn and a farm (for storing grain and corn), a mishana (for drying fruit), a kačar (for roasting brandy) and a stable (for cattle).
The second part of the museum exhibition consists of objects with an original appearance, but adapted to tourist needs: a hall and a summer stage for exhibitions, seminars, literary meetings, theater performances and concerts; exhibition and sales area of products of old crafts and copies of museum exhibits made by village artisans; the Museum's inn, which offers its visitors Zlatibor dishes prepared in the old fashioned way, along with accommodation for guests.
The Museum's program is also the preservation of old crafts, so training in blacksmithing, blacksmithing and pottery skills is organized in three equipped workshops during the summer. An integral part of the Museum is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul with a valuable iconostasis from 1764.
You can visit this unique open-air museum in the winter from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and in the summer from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
